from Sunrise to Sunset

About

My name is Tanel. Or like I usually need to explain – it is like “tunnel”, but with an “A”.

The aim of this site is to share my travel stories, guides, help you with planning your next trip and complete your memories into your own story.

Why “from sunrise to sunset”?
As Cheryl Strayed wrote in her novel “Wild” which is a story of her hiking a part of the 4270km long Pacific Crest Trail :”There is a sunrise and a sunset every day and you can choose to be there for it. You can put yourself in the way of beauty.”

As you might guess, I like to travel. I like to travel so much that I have decided to spend most of my time doing that.
The first time I travelled alone, I was attending a student seminar in France, Lille in 2011. The experience of other cultures was really fascinating and I sought out more similar events and even went on to start a Tallinn branch of an international student organisation ESTIEM. With that organisation, I was lucky to visit a big part of the countries in Europe throughout my student days. During that time I also had my first long backpacking trip to South-East Asia – 2 months in 2015. I believe that trip was the one that really got me hooked on travel deep.

At the beginning of 2018, I quit my well-payed construction project manager job to travel. I spent the whole year backpacking around Asia. After that, I have been on-off back to Estonia and trying to spend more time on the road each year.
In 2020, when the pandemic started, I got “stuck” for 6 months in Mexico.
In 2021 I was travelling for 6.5 months and in 2022 I got that number to 8 months.

I have found my interest mostly in hiking trips and adventure travel

As I do videography and photography I am open for different collaboration offers. I have been working together with hotels and tour companies in Central and South America for promotional materials. I have been creating content for Estonian outdoor apparel and design companies.

Whenever possible I try to travel slow and immerse myself in a country and culture by spending more than a couple of weeks there. This is possible by staying on budget which allows me to experience the location more from a locals perspective.

Where I have been so far?

A beautiful and tranquil hike on the Portuguese coast. A very accessible and beginner-friendly trail allows everyone to come and see the wilder side of the coastline. You can easily come and just even do day hikes as every stage begins and ends in a town or a village. We did the hike on 2nd half of September and the temperatures were still quite hot. At the same, the sea was enjoyable and allowed for refreshing swims. I would even recommend doing the hike a little later in the season when it is a bit cooler. Algarve is not cheap though. A price for a double room began from 60-70 euros per night. To be fair, as we like to have flexibility we also did not make reservations in advance. For affordability, there are official campsites normally a little away from the trail as well. The price was around 20 € per night for a tent with 2 people. It is recommended to use the official campsites as wild camping is prohibited in Portugal. That said, we managed to sneak in 2 nights away from the official sites. Pack up early and leave no trace of course. ;)
 -> 2 nights guesthouse
 -> 6 nights campsite
 -> 2 nights wild camping The trail is not difficult in a traditional sense, as there are no mountains and has access to facilities. But as most of it is in soft sand, pushing through the sand in the heat of the sun with no shade makes it moderately challenging.

The Portuguese coast can be rough and rugged. After walking more than 270 kilometers by the sea, we managed to experience many different sides of the extremes. The high seas barge in with their energy, crashing into the dry land, and creating high and steep cliffs. When the western side of the coast is more like a desert with very low vegetation (if any), then the southern coast also boasts some greener terrain. You would think that walking several days by the same coast is similar and becomes numbing, then in reality each day on the Fishermens' Trail brought something new and exciting each day. #fishermenstrail #portugal #hikingportugal #hiking #rotavicentina #trekking #dronephotography #visitportugal #travelportugal
