from Sunrise to Sunset

During one evening in Bangkok, we gathered some people in the hostel where I was staying at and decided to visit Ratchada Rot Fai Night Market. It is a bit out of the way from Khao San Road (close to which I was staying at), so it takes about half an hour taxi/tuk-tuk drive to get there. The visit to the market turned out to be really nice. It is an authentic open-air bazaar with many vendors selling items from clothing and souvenirs til’ food, snacks and drinks. “Rot Fai” is translated from Thai to English as “Train”. It is actually a new market and was opened in 2015. I was surprised about how organized and clean the market was. At the same time, it still accompanies the familiar South-East Asian feeling. One person from our group got some intel that it is possible to go to a parking house next to the market in order to get some good views on the market itself. So we went to a parking house and stepped into the elevator. The views were supposed to be from about 5th floor so we were naturally surprised when the elevator had buttons to go up to the 41st floor. Not giving it too much thought we just took the ride up to the last floor. Stepping out from the elevator we noticed another flight of stairs which took us to a technical room. The doors were opened so we just entered. One door with an EXIT sign on it was unlocked so we went out, climbed around some ventilation system pipes and we were just speechless. It turned out we were on top of one of the highest buildings in Bangkok. The views on the bustling city with lights in the dark where just breathtaking. We sat on the edge and took our time enjoying and taking in the city. After getting back to the hostel and getting a couple of beers we started considering going somewhere to catch the sunrise. We did some research about some possible spots (including the famous Ghost Tower) but in the end made a decision to return to the same building. There were many variables if it is even possible again – guards stopping us, building being closed, the last floor not being open to sunrise side or doors being locked. Even if we could make it to the top then there might be a lot of clouds and no sunrise visible. But sometimes you just need to take your chances and go for it. And this time it worked out perfectly! We managed to get to the same level as the evening before, but this time we got even a better surprise. We noticed some stairs, which we had missed previously because it had been dark. We took a couple of steps and once again we were left speechless! There was a 360-degree view all around and we were on the highest point of the skyscraper. It looked similar to being a helicopter landing point. And even better! We were on time for the best sunrise experience I have ever had! Video – Rooftopping in BANGKOK
